Discussion about Cudù with Luc Van Lieshout, Christian Burchard, Steven Brown - Waterplay
VariesWent
On Ao Vivo I criticised Cudu for being involved with the wrong types of musicians, that they indeed had much more talent. A talent which has been revealed further on this new album, which features a much better choice of collaborators in Christian Burchard (leader of Embryo), Steven Brown and Luc Van Liesholt (of Tuxedomoon). In fact Christian Burchard is prominently featured on six of the eleven tracks on the CD (two of these, one being the very Embryo styled Waterplay itself, are not on the LP version) composing and indelibly laying his stamp on the music. The Tuxedomoon influences are more subtle, as Cudu have always had a degree of Tuxedomoon styling, and Cudu are presently only a nucleus of two; barely a band in themselves. Paolo Lotti has really blossomed as a guitarist and become a talented innovator in his own right, OK, there's Fripp and Frith stylings, yet his looping and cut-up techniques are fascinating and full of complexity, in a very different way.The present day Cudu sound sits on the more ethereal end of the No Wave genre, slightly jazzy, slightly rocky, a bit new-wave, with a lot of strangeness and invention. As such, uncategorizable, very varied and always fascinating. File under "?". From my review in Audion #21, published in May 1992
