Notes

Jackie Miller (Davidson) and Gayle Caldwell were a pop-folk from 1964 through 1966. Before they formed their duo, they were the two female members of the New Christy Minstrels during that group's peak years (1962 through early 1964). They left the Minstrels in February of 1964 and, soon afterwards, announced their plans to form Jackie and Gayle. Given their high profile success with the minstrels (they were among the most popular members,) they were immediately snapped up by the William Morris Agency and signed by Capitol Records. Because folk music was fading fast on the charts, the ladies were pushed in a pop "girl group" direction by their new agent and Capitol Records. They were booked on Shindig as semi-regulars and, in fact, were the first act to take the stage on the debut telecast of that influential show. For their first single, Capitol chose a novelty tune -- "Why Can't My Teacher Look Like Mr. Novak" -- hoping to leverage the then popular TV series, Mr. Novak, starring James Franciscus as a high school teacher. The single was recorded in August 1964, working with David Gates (later of Bread,) and released in December. Jackie and Gayle performed the song on Shindig at the time of its release, but it failed to chart. Capitol soon dropped them. This may have been a hasty decision because the ladies had recorded some stronger material with Gates back in August that remains unreleased to this today. In particular, they recorded "That Boy's Gonna Be Mine," which they performed on the [unaired] pilot of "Where the Action Is" and a song penned by David Gates called "Little Heart," which they performed on Hollywood a Go Go. Both tracks were far stronger than the gimmicky Novak ditty. The flip side of the "Novak" single -- "I Can't Go Out Tonight" -- has attracted some attention over the years as a somewhat hokey reflection of teenage dating angst, but at the time of the single's release it attracted no attention whatsoever.
